Sing, Dance, Play 1: Mommy & Me (9 mo - 2 yrs old)
Thank you for your interest in music classes for young children. I am delighted to offer play-based classes in the Orff Sculwerk tradition for children ages nine months and up. Engaging in musical learning brings children countless benefits, not least of which are the simple joys of music making and dancing together with friends. With frequent high-quality experiences, children and parents alike will develop musical skills such as steady beat, rhythm, singing with good pitch and beautiful tone, musical form and structure, movement to music, and an understanding of emotional expression.
These young children learn best and experience great joy when learning happens through play. All activities are thoughtfully planned with the children’s developmental stages in mind. If a class includes a mixed age group, age-appropriate variations on activities will be suggested to the parents. There will be bounces, tickles, and finger plays for the very youngest children and an increasing amount of pretend play for ages three and up. All classes will include rhymes, American children’s and folk songs, world music, instrument play on drums and small percussion instruments, free movement, and the beginnings of circle dances/folk dances. I will also frequently include the use of puppets, story books, and other visual delights.
