Short Film and Video Games Production
(High School)

** This is an evening online class only **

Wanna make your own short movie and Fortnite video game? This hands-on ONLINE class will teach students how to use Unreal Engine – the game engine behind titles such as Fortnite and Rocket League – for creating their own short films and Fortnite games.  Near the end of the school year, we’ll screen all of the students’ work in a short film festival on the EUREKA! campus.

While the course is meant for a student who has never used Unreal Engine, there are some specific prerequisites needed to take this class:

  • Students must have a strong PC capable of running Unreal Engine (any “gaming level” PC should be fine) and enough hard drive space to download and install Unreal Engine (minimum 120 GB for download and install)
  • Parents must help set up the user account for the student (if student already has an Epic Gamers account, that is great – it’s the same account for running Unreal Engine)
  • Parent must oversee the installation and first time running of Unreal Engine prior to the first class.
  • For optional publishing of student’s Fortnite game, a parent needs to set up the account, as you must be over 18 to publish (includes setting up tax and bank account info – I have a video for how to do that).
  • Student needs a minimum of 2 monitors – 1 monitor to watch the screen share from the instructor, and 1 monitor to follow along themselves.
  • Webcams will all need to be on for the entire class each week.
  • 3-button mouse is required (laptop trackpad is not sufficient) – scroll wheel for middle mouse is fine.
  • Ability to screenshare when showing work to the class or having questions.
  • Familiarity with game play in 3D space such as Fortnite or Roblox is ideal, but not required.
