Principles of Design (6th-12th)
Semester 1:
Students will learn the basics that go into every good design and how to create their own. The class will look at how the principles are utilized, in both old masterpieces and modern examples such as advertisements and product labels. The individual principles will be focused on one by one to help students not only learn but master the building blocks for a good design.
Semester 2:
Building on top of the principles learned during semester one, students will jump into a semester-long project in which they will design their own brand. This could be used as a great opportunity for entrepreneurship or getting practice at design and creating a fictional brand. Either way the students will hone their skills on how to create elements like brand identity, logos, business cards, flyers, packaging, and anything else that they believe their brand would benefit from. It will be great life practice even if they don’t plan on going into art or design, as this life skill can be applied to basically any business endeavor in the future.
Please note: Although it is helpful for students to take both semesters, as they build on one another, new students are very welcome during semester 2!
In class, we will learn the fundamentals behind each principle, and study examples of design in art and advertisements followed by hands-on creative time to practice the principles we have learned. The hands-on components will include working with a variety of different mediums such as collage, watercolor, pencil drawings, markers, and more!
Between classes, students may be asked to finish class work, look for examples of what we learned, or research information for the project.
