A History of the Middle Ages in 100 Objects (7th-10th)
A History of the Middle Ages in 100 Objects explores a 1200-year span of human history from 400s C.E. to 1600s C.E around the globe. Fourteenth century Renaissance historians often described this period as “dark,” as if nothing exciting ever happened. However, the recent scholarships have revealed to us the undeniably rich legacy of the Middle Ages. In order to better understand our modern times, it is necessary to know how medieval civilizations rose and fell, and interacted with one another on a global scale, setting the stage for early modern times.
The class presents 100 objects from various museums, archives, and historic sites, which are to serve as living proof and primary sources. Students will take virtual field trips to famous museums and historical sites. With an interdisciplinary approach to history, culture, and art, the class will engage students in various learning activities, such as history journaling, discussion, research, presentation, and hands-on projects. The class aims to equip students to be a better historian by teaching them effective tools of learning.
