Voice and Verdict (9th-12th)

The first semester will be a public speaking course. Using IEW’s Introduction to Public Speaking as our spine, students will learn the parts of an effective speech and practice its composition and delivery. We will work on different genres of speeches including self-introductory, narrative, and expository. Students will learn and refine the skills of poise, phrasing, eye contact, and volume during speech delivery. Students will deliver speeches in front of their peers and learn from one another.

In January, students will focus on preparing a mock trial, which is our second semester capstone project. Students will learn about the American justice system, how cases are tried, the roles of attorney, judge, witness, and jury in a legal proceeding. They will look over the assigned case’s evidentiary documents carefully, and construct a case. The year will culminate with trying the case before a judge in a simulated courtroom. There will be an opportunity to compete against another homeschool mock trial team. Students will use their newly honed public speaking skills, engage in teamwork, critical thinking and research. Mock trial is challenging but so much fun.
