Little Knitters Beginning Handwork (3rd-7th)

This is a great class for beginners to gain a hands- on, guided introduction to the basics of knitting: casting on, knitting, reading a pattern, and finishing a simple square that can be used as a washcloth, coaster, or potholder. Students are encouraged to get comfy and enjoy the process (and sound!) of knitting needles clicking and sliding as the textile “magically” grows between their own two hands.

As students gain confidence in these skills, they will have opportunity to knit pieces in various patterns at their own pace and with trouble-shooting available for common questions and “oopsies” that arise.

Each student will need to have their own pair of knitting needles. Size 7 (4.5mm), single-point needles are recommended for beginners, and can be made of any material including metal, bamboo, or plastic. Some yarn from our Eureka stash will be available for use, or you may purchase your own favorite colors to use. When purchasing your own yarn, select yarn that is medium weight, worsted, or size 4. The material of the yarn can be polyester, acrylic, cotton, or a blend, but should be a uniform thickness throughout. Specialty types such as variable, chenille, textured, looped, or adorned can be tricky to work with and should be attempted after a knitter is more advanced.
